Samantha Ip is a partner of the firm and Co-Chair of the Insurance Group. She is also a member of the Construction & Procurement Group.

With 17 years of experience handling insurance and construction matters, Samantha has been nationally recognized for her legal work. She has appeared as counsel in the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal and Federal Court, as well as before administrative tribunals. Samantha resolves claims through alternative dispute resolution for effective risk management.

In the insurance industry she represents insurers located in Canada, the U.S. and in the London market. Samantha is counsel on coverage matters, bad faith claims, complex liability and multi-party litigation. She is the supervising lawyer for an insurer on a mandatory construction warranty program for both coverage and recovery.

Samantha also works for the construction industry. She represents her clients in all facets of a project, from the preparation of construction contracts to the handling and resolution of claims.

Samantha is a regular speaker at seminars; she has presented on construction and insurance topics for industry associations, including Buildex Vancouver, Canadian Construction Women, Vancouver Regional Construction Association, and the BC Insurance Institute. She was the editor for the Continuing Legal Education Annual Law Review for Construction from 2007 to 2011. In addition, Samantha has been published in Construction Business, Legal Edge and Adjusters Quarterly.

She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1991 and her Bachelor of Laws degree in 1994, both from the University of British Columbia. In addition to English, Samantha speaks French, Cantonese and Mandarin.

Providing opinions and representation to insurers and brokers on varied coverage issues, including competing and overlapping insurance coverage, E&O coverage, and D&O coverage.

Drafting of policy wording and special endorsements for underwriters.

Assisting underwriters with preparation of terms and conditions for websites.

Defence of complex claims and technical subject matters, including refractory linings, feller bunchers and other heavy machinery, bridges, glazing, and building envelope related issues.

Representation of insureds on multi-party litigation product liability and construction claims.

Defence of bodily injury claims, including traumatic brain injury, fibromyalgia, quadriplegia, paraplegia and other permanent disability claims.

Defence of liquor liability claims.

Defence of claims against road contractors.

Defence of property damage claims, including loss by fire and related perils.

Defence of first party fraud claims by insureds.

Representation of excess insurer on serious and catastrophic injury claims.

Representing out-of-province insurers and motorists in third-party and direct recourse claims.

Delay, productivity and acceleration claims.

Deficiency claims, including technical subject matters such as refractory linings, feller bunchers and other heavy machinery, piping, glazing, tiling, cement applications, processed wood, roofing, and building envelope related deficiencies.

Representing both established businesses and entrepreneurs in contract disputes.

Representing clients in complex PPSA priority disputes involving three international jurisdictions.

Experience in admiralty law and with the Canada Shipping Act, including the unique liability provisions.

Acting for construction parties in commercial disputes.

Representation of clients in Joint Venture and development disputes.

Acted as co-counsel in a leading decision in British Columbia on the topic of shareholders' remedies at the Court of Appeal level.
