Representative WorkDrafting and prosecuting patent applications in technical fields that include electronics, software, communications, business methods, and mechanics. Drafting and prosecuting industrial design applications, trademark applications, and copyright applications. Advising clients on the strategic use of intellectual property. Negotiating and drafting a wide variety of contracts, including license agreements, agency and distribution agreements, joint venture and strategic alliance agreements, co-marketing agreements, software and website development agreements, turn-key system agreements, web-hosting agreements, Internet service provider agreements, application service provider agreements, and various types of e-commerce agreements. Structuring corporations and limited partnerships for young technology ventures. Debt and equity financings, including angel, venture capital, and public rounds. ProfileMichael Roman is Associate Counsel to Clark Wilson LLP and is a member of the firm’s Technology and Intellectual Property Practice Group. He has diverse experience in technology law, not only helping clients to secure, commercialize, and defend their intellectual capital, but also advising them on related business matters. As well as being a lawyer, Michael is also a Registered Patent Agent and a Registered Trade-mark Agent, qualified to practice before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and to represent Canadian-resident clients before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Michael was the founding Lawyer-in-Residence at the Simon Fraser University TIME Centre incubator. He lectures widely and has taught intellectual property law at the post-secondary level, including at the University of Victoria (Faculty of Law), Simon Fraser University (Management of Technology MBA program, Faculty of Applied Science), the University of British Columbia (Faculty of Law, Faculty of Commerce) and the British Columbia Institute of Technology (Venture Program). Michael currently teaches the graduate course Intellectual Property Management and Technology Commercialization at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Applied Science. Michael obtained a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Electrical Engineering with honours from the University of Toronto in 1988 and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of British Columbia in 1991.
