Advising on tax aspects of corporate and commercial transactions, such as reducing tax liabilities arising on the sale of a business.

Reviewing and advising on tax aspects of share offerings and real estate financing structures, including flow-through financings in the mining and alternative energy sectors.

Assisting clients to establish trusts for tax and asset protection purposes, including family trusts, alter ego and joint spousal trusts, disability trusts, immigration trusts, and residence trusts, and advising on trust transactions including restructuring and winding up.

Providing a full range of estate planning services and advising estates on legal and tax-related matters.

Assisting with the establishment, registration and operation of not-for-profit and charitable organizations.

Profile

Richard Weiland is an associate with Clark Wilson LLP. His practice has an emphasis on providing tax advice in the context of corporate reorganizations, commercial transactions, and estate planning. He also assists business clients with many general corporate and commercial matters.

Richard has completed all three parts of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants’ In-depth Tax Course. He authored a new chapter on Probate Fees for the 2007 edition of the BC Probate and Estate Administration Practice Manual published by the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia. He is also a contributing author for updates to several chapters in the British Columbia Estate Planning & Wealth Preservation manual also published by CLE.

Richard earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from Trinity Western University in 1997, and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Victoria in 2001. He was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 2002 after completing his articles with Clark Wilson LLP.
