Karen Monteith, a Registered Trade-mark Agent with our Intellectual Property Group, was quoted in a November 9 article in The Lawyers Weekly discussing new generic top level domains (gTLDs) that will be introduced in 2013. A trademark clearinghouse has been designed to prevent trademark infringement, but Karen points out that the lack of a “defensive blocking mechanism” and limitations to exact marks and registered marks are drawbacks to the system.
